Pilates is a unique system of exercise created by Joseph Pilates in Europe and introduced in the United States in 1926. Pilates continued to refine and perfect his approach throughout his life. Today there are many programs offered on the market under the name Pilates. While many of them are excellent workouts, few are truly Pilates. Pilates is a specific set of exercises organized together in a certain fashion for well thought out reasons. No one denies evolution is a good thing, but at what point has something been altered to the point that it no longer falls under it's original definition? My training was directly linked to the teachings of Joseph Pilates, and I continue to train within the parameters of his work while taking the body in front of me into careful consideration.
